Stella's Girl: The Autobiography of Captain Evelyn Decker, a World War II and Korean War Veteran - by Evelyn Decker (Captain) This is the story of Evelyn Decker, a decorated veteran of World War II and the Korean War. 1st Lt. Decker (later captain) served in the U.S. Army, Nurse Corps. She was among the nearly 600 military nurses who served in the military hospital in the Korean theater. She was assigned to the 8055 Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) Unit. When Evelyn Decker entered the Army Nurse Corps on 9 November 1944, she began a career that would make her a pioneer as the military underwent changes to reshape the Army. The Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 granted women permanent status in the Regular and Reserve forces of the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps as well as the newly created Air Force.
